This one starts slow but gradually gets better and better. It’s 19th century Gothic horror focused on a governess caring for two small children in a haunted mansion. It’s Henry James, so expect very ornate language. The first person narration is tough to follow at times; lots of very long, meandering sentences. It is an 88 page book that feels like 300 pages. The first 15 pages or so are rather boring but once you get past them this really delightful slow-burning tension kicks in and just keeps gradually building. What’s fun is the ambiguity regarding the governess’ sanity and the nature of the children. Are the children a part of the demonic machinations or oblivious to them? Are the monsters real or all just in the governess’ head? You’re never quite sure what to think as things get gradually darker and more sinister. Really enjoyable read.
