Movie Review: The Lighthouse
This one was a wild ride. The brilliant trailers don’t do it justice.
The Lighthouse is the second feature film from Robert Eggers, the mind behind 2015’s beloved and haunting film The Witch. What makes it work so well is its laser focus. The Lighthouse is a small scale, relatively short film with only two characters and a threadbare plot. Two lighthouse keepers slowly go mad after being stranded by a storm. That’s basically it. Yet it’s just done so masterfully. The Lovecraftian horror vibe, the maniacal performance of Willem Dafoe, the creative use of sound with the constant foghorns and Irish jigs — it’s just a good time. Robert Pattinson also deserves credit as he more than held his own in a role that demanded he get very weird. Not as deep or complex as you may think. Not a life-changing film by any stretch. But still, just perfectly executed and fun.
