A masterpiece

The first Nioh game back in 2017 was a pleasant surprise. As a long-time fan of the Ninja Gaiden series I recall being a bit disappointed developer Team Ninja was creating an original new series instead of a sequel for my boy Ryu Hayabusa. However also being a fan of From Software’s Dark Souls games I was immediately hooked by Nioh’s endlessly satisfying combat and deep customization. Nioh is what you can call a yarikomi style game. It is filled to the brim with content. The base campaign includes scores of optional missions, online co-op, and five richly unique difficulty levels (they don’t just bump up enemy stats, it’s a whole new experience each time).

If you loved the first Nioh, you’ll love Nioh 2. Nioh 2 is basically an extension of the first game. It adds the ability to create your own character, four new weapon types, and a new demon transformation mechanic. The fast-paced fluid action is the best Team Ninja has ever produced. What really makes it special is the sheer variety of builds and playstyles. The loot system isn’t for everyone. You will have to manage tons of item drops. Also, it is a very complex game. There are A LOT of different mechanics. It is easy to miss things. I did not understand the ‘added effect’ skill system (it lets you apply stat debuffs and other effects to specific combat skills) until halfway through the game. I sometimes wish they had streamlined things a bit.

Still for me Nioh 2 is a masterpiece. I have played hundreds of games and this one is definitely in my top ten. The excellent soundtrack and entertaining anime-style retelling of Japanese history are the icing on an already delicious cake. If you never played the first Nioh game don’t let that stop you from starting here. The story is basically a prequel and other than a few cameos you won’t be missing much context. Even sweeter, there are remastered 4K 60fps editions with all the DLC available now on PS5 and PC. If you are up for a challenge then don’t miss this one.

Grade: A+
