Could have been way better

Don’t pay full price for this one.

This one is fun but is overwhelmed by an aura of stunted potential. It is a really short and small game. I beat it on assisted, normal, hardcore, and nightmare difficulty in under twelve hours total. It deserves credit for the nice horror / B movie atmosphere. It controls well thanks to it using the same solid engine as the RE2 Remake and more recent RE4 Remake. Graphics are nice, music is okay, and gameplay is pretty fun. I enjoyed the neat dodge mechanic and satisfying gunplay.

Tragically, the development was clearly rushed. A lot of content from the original Resident Evil 3 was cut. Nemesis isn’t nearly present enough as a threat. He doesn’t offer nearly the challenge and fun of Mr. X from RE2. Another year of dev time and this could have been as good as the other remakes. Though perhaps the rushed nature of this one is a kind of meta-commentary on the original Resident Evil 3, which itself was something of cash grab that didn’t add much to the larger story.

Grade: C+
