Watch Review: Rolex Milgauss
The Milgauss is, for my money, the best “every day” Rolex in the lineup. It is to me the best version of the classic zero complication Oyster Perpetual watch, a line that recently saw an update with several new colorful iterations, none as colorful or fun as the Milgauss. The Milgauss’ magnetic resistance is something of a meme given that all oyster case Rolexes have similar antimagnetic properties at this point. What’s more Omega watches are 15x more antimagnetic at a fraction of the price. Nevertheless, as an engineer I appreciate the nerdy science heritage of the Milgauss and not having to worry about magnetism is definitely helpful.
Unfortunately the antimagnetic protection doesn’t stop the polished center links and clasp from being scratch ‘magnets’ (horrible pun alert). It bugged me at first but honestly given how colorful the watch is I think the polished finishing makes sense. It’s rather bling-y for a true science watch. I’d recommend an Omega Railmaster on a strap if you want a real no-nonsense science watch (will do a review of that one later). Nevertheless the shiny Milgauss is still a beautiful timepiece. The green tinted crystal is gorgeous to view from the side. I also love that it is sort of the black sheep in the Rolex family. It’s truly the enthusiast Rolex. While everyone else chases Submariners and Daytonas the Milgauss makes its own neat little statement for folks wanting a bit of hipster cred. It’s the non-Rolex fan’s Rolex.
With 100m water resistance, screw down crown, the super comfy oyster bracelet, and a sturdy antimagnetic movement, the Milgauss has the versatility to fill out a minimalist collection or even serve as a one watch collection.
